Obagi Skin Treatments

Obagi Skin Treatments

Skin peels, along with Botox and Dermal Fillers complete the perfect triumvirate needed for the ideal facial rejuvenation. It is not enough to just remove the wrinkles, and improve the shape and contour of the face, we also have to improve the condition of the skin itself.

The Obagi Nu-derm system and the Obagi Blue peels are transforming the world of chemical skin peeling. The other TCA peels and glycolic peels are great and can achieve good results, but in the world of chemical peels Obagi is the definite king. The active prescription strength ingredients hydroquinone and tretinoin, along with the unique patented deep penetrating system make Obagi a truly special treatment. They take chemical peels to a different level and give results which take the skin through an amazing transformation as a direct result of a transformation at a deeper cellular level of the skin.

Obagi is a true all rounder, and can peel, rejuvenate and de-pigment any type of skin safely. So for darker skin types, this really is the holy grail.

The Nu-Derm system creams alone can sometimes achieve great results without the need for an actual chemical peel.

All OBAGI products; OBAGI ELASTIderm, OBAGI ELASTIlash, OBAGI-C Rx, OBAGI CLEANZIderm, OBAGI Rosaclear plus extra items from the OBAGI Nu-Derm system can now be purchased directly from Milo Clinic. A consultation is required to ensure you use the right products for your skin. Please call for further details.

What can we use Skin Peels to treat?

The ideal areas to treat with the Obagi Nu-Derm system and the Obagi blue peel are: the face and neck. Peels are used to rejuvenate the skin, improve skin quality, remove wrinkles, improve acne scarring and to remove sun spots as well as mild and severe pigmentations.

How does it work?

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It takes as long as 5-6 weeks to fully regenerate, with the tough outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, acting as an impenetrable barrier protecting the body from injury, infection, pollution and the ever more harmful sun rays. The outer layer of the skin also acts as a diary of sorts, recording any past events like severe sunburn or acne scarring, and becoming thicker with the passing years. Because the skin takes so long to regenerate, these old memories are never removed, and the fresh new skin is never given the chance to come to the surface.

With the process of peeling we are speeding up the regeneration of the skin, and by wiping out some of these old memories, we are allowing the healthy new skin to come to the surface. In addition the process of chemical peeling induces new collagen to rush up to the surface of the skin. A good analogy is that of pruning a withering rose, achieving a subsequent new growth and fresh beauty.

What makes the Obagi system so special are it’s active ingredients hydroquinone and tretinoin. Hydroquinone stops the melanocytes in the skin from producing any more pigment and the tretinoin, which is a Vitamin A based ingredient, takes out any excess pigmentation already in the skin as well as removing wrinkles and rejuvenating the skin. The whole system exfoliates the skin, and the unique patented Deep Penetrating system takes these ingredients much deeper than any other skin peel.

The treatment

During your consultation we will tailor the treatment specifically to your needs and skin type. We will then “prepare” your skin by putting you on a personalised 6-12 week course of Obagi Nu-Derm creams which contain the very important tretinoin and hydroquinone ingredients. You will need to apply about 5 creams every morning and evening, including an SPF cream.

We will bring you back for a review after a few weeks, and at this time we will decide when the actual blue peel will take place. The Obagi Nu-Derm system can be so effective by itself, that often there is no need to actually proceed to the peel.

The actual Obagi Blue peel treatments last about 30 minutes and involve gently applying the special peel solutions to the relevant areas.

Does it hurt?

There can be a temporary burning sensation but this is never severe, and the clinician is always in control with the blue dye used in these peels ensuring that they are always at the right depth. Taking some paracetamol before the procedure or using a cooling fan during the treatment will ensure a good level of comfort.

How long do the effects last?

As long as the patient continues the use of the prescribed creams and uses a daily sun protection factor, the results can be very long lasting. A healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle play a big part in this.

Is it safe?

The Obagi system and peels have a very long safety track record dating back to the 1970s and it has the full approval of the very stringent FDA in America.

We have a very strict protocol which helps us avoid any of the usual pitfalls of chemical peeling. The blue dye used during our peels ensures the ultimate safety, letting the physician know at which depth they are at every stage of the peeling process.

Are there any side-effects?

Severe long term side-effects are very rare. The Obagi system gives second to none results in skin rejuvenation and repair, but there are some short term side-effects that any dedicated patient has to put up with. These include redness, tightness and peeling of the skin, and these can occur even while just using the preparatory Nu-Derm creams. These symptoms are rarely severe and as we always say, the more of a reaction you get, the better the results in the long term.

After every procedure, we will give you aftercare advice.
